The 6 key qualities

When becoming a Lay Magistrate, you will be asked about the 6 key qualities and whether you have them. This is a major part when applying for the role of a Lay Magistrate, so it is vital that you know them individually. Here is what you will need to know:



1. Good character - This consists of having respect and trust others, as you will be working closely with other magistrates, respect for confidences and willingness.

2. Understanding and communication - This involves the ability to understand documents, identify relevant facts, follow evidence and arguments, have an ability to concentrate on cases for long periods of time and be able to communicate effectively with different people.

3. Social awareness - This consists of appreciation and acceptance of the rule of law. You will also have to have an understanding of the community in which you are serving in and have total respect for people from different backgrounds, religious beliefs, sex, gender etc. 

4. Maturity and sound temperament - You will need the ability to relate to and work with others, have respect for the views of other people, willingness to consider advice, confidence and a sense of fairness.

5. Sound judgement - This consists of the ability to think logically, have common sense, weigh arguments and reach a balanced decision.

6. Commitment and reliability - Finally you must have commitment to serve the community, willingness to undertake at least 26 half day sittings a year, the required training and have sufficiently good health. You must be reliable and make sure you commit yourself to all these things.
